Guide in the Hospital
FIRE / SMOKE

These
fire and emergency procedures have been designed for your safety. Please
study them carefully.
-
Know your
senior staff members so that you can follow their instructions during an
emergency
-
determine
the safest and quickest route to your assembly area

ACTION TO BE TAKEN IN THE
EVENT OF A FIRE
|
|
Remove
patients/persons
from danger
Alert
the
Switchboard. Dial _____ and give your name, what is on fire, and the exact
location
of the fire
Close
doors
and windows if safe to do so
Extinguish
if
safe to do so |

Turn off
oxygen, only if trained to do so
-
Do not
use lifts
-
Keep visitors
with patients
-
Keep fire
and smoke doors closed
-
Take a
head count of evacuees
-
Leave
lights on
-
Remain
at the triage or safe site until advised by senior staff
(Do
not re-enter building until advised it is safe to do so)

All exits
in your work area and the assembly points.
-
In an
emergency situation. the presence of fire. smoke or other hazards may affect
the choice of evacuation routes and prohibit the use of some exits.
LIFTS
MAY NOT BE USED UNLESS DIRECTED BY THE RESPONDING EXTERNAL EMERGENCY SERVICE.
Evacuation
is the movement of patients and personnel from the immediate danger areas
to an area of safety
in rapid and safe manner.
|
This
may mean the evacuation of a room or department to a safe area within the
building, or the total evacuation of the building to an assembly point
that affords shelter, medical support and supervision until the emergency
is under control.
AUTHORITY
TO EVACUATE
The
decision to evacuate to a safe area within the building is to be made by
made by the most senior person at the time in consultation with the corresponding
external emergency service (e.g. Fire Brigade)
STAGES
OF EVACUATION
There
are three stages of evacuation:

Stage
1
|
Remove
persons from the immediate danger area.
e.g.
moving people from the room which is affected by fire of from an area that
is unsafe.
|

Stage
2 |
Moving
persons to a safer area.
e.g.
an adjoining compartment protected by fire doors or to a level below the
affected floor.
|
|
Stage
3 |
Move
persons to an assembly point - complete evacuation of the building.
|

THE TIME, OR THE DISASTER RECOVERY COORDINATOR TO MANAGE THESE EMERGENCIES.

External emergencies that may occur include the following: storm and tempest.
hazardous materials emergency, earthquake, high rise building emergency,
crowd disorder casualties, major transportation accident , aircraft crash.

Depending upon the nature of the emergency and availability of other emergency
resources, any health care facility may become involved in an emergency
response.
-
Any Hospital staff who may be regularly involved in an external emergency
situation should be fully aware of the duties they are required to complete.
Other staff will be instructed as to their specific duties at the time.
BOMB THREAT
IF
YOU RECEIVE A BOMB THREAT:
Keep
calm and sound calm. Concentrate on the caller's voice and background noises.
Do
not hang up - even when the call is completed.

AFTER A BOMB THREAT CALL:
DO
NOT HANG UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
Take
the following action immediately.
1.
Notify Security or your Supervisor. Do not discuss the matter with staff.
2.
Security or your Supervisor will take any further action that is required.
3.
Complete a bomb threat report as soon as possible during or after the call.
IF
A SUSPECTED EXPLOSIVE OBJECT IS FOUND:
1.
Do not touch it - clear the area.
2.
Prevent all people from entering the area where the bomb is located.
3.
Notify the senior person in your area.
4.
Follow the instructions of your senior person.
